Nashville, Tenn., AC Hosts Girl Scout Event

The Nashville, Tenn., alumnae chapter presented its annual self-esteem program to several Girl Scout troops from middle Tennessee. AC Girl Scout chair, Shari Bazydola, opened the program by speaking to the girls about positive body image and self-confidence. The Girl Scouts then performed a skit that compared a confident girl to a non-confident girl.

Participants also received skin-and-hair care tips with the help of Kappa Delta alumnae volunteers. Alumnae discussed the importance of natural beauty, feeling good about yourself, and putting your best face forward.

The Girl Scouts participated in a “Miss Confidence” pageant. Each girl made her own sash that highlighted a feature she was most proud of. Examples included “Miss Great Hair” and “Miss Beautiful Smile.”

Once the sashes were made, each girl stood up in front of the room, introduced herself, explained her best feature and spoke about why she is confident. Participants were then given a Kappa Delta/Girl Scout patch. After the girls received their patch, they stood up as a group and made a confidence pledge.

Making Great Things Happen - Detroit Tri-County Alumnae Chapter and Gamma Omicron - Wayne State

On November 21, 2009 the Detroit Tri-County, Mich., alumnae chapter and Gamma Omicron - Wayne State University joined with the Girl Scout Councils of Southeastern Michigan and Miss Michigan Nicole Blaszczyk for a “Journey Down the Runway." Miss Michigan, a 12-year Girl Scout, and the KDs served as role models as they focused on the following topics: leadership, beauty, fashion and community service.

With their attention turned to leadership, the girls participated in a Girl Scouts' “Scout’s Own” ceremony to describe a leader from A-Z. They then heard from a guest speaker, KD alumnae and executive coach, Prudence Cole. The discussion focused on anti-bullying and tied to objectives in the Girl Scouts Journey books.

During the beauty workshop, the girls discussed “inner beauty” and “being true to your self.” They had an opportunity to meet Miss Michigan, and she shared a video and some lessons on the importance of inner -beauty. Also, the KD’s spoke on confidence as it relates to body image and self-esteem.

With the focus on fashion, the girls experimented with altering clothing to new styles and, learned how to make a shoulder bag from an old T-shirt. They even had a runway to show -off their new attire!

For the community-service segment, the Girl Scouts decorated mirrors to be donated to Children’s Miracle Network at Beaumont Hospital. To boost confidence of the patients, the girls wrote messages on the mirrors like, such as "You're Beautiful!," "Lookin' Good!" and "Dream Big!" They discussed the importance of giving back to their community throughout their lives, including in high school and college, especially through KD.

Watch the event on YouTube!

The KDs attending found this event to be very enjoyable. They will continue to partner with the Girl Scouts in southeast Michigan for similar programs.

Special thanks to Girl Scout Councils of Southeastern Michigan; Miss Michigan, Nicole Blaszczyk; and our KD volunteers Terry Margolis, Prudence Cole, Carol Burr, Kelly McCallum, Karen LaPalm, the Detroit Tri-County alumnae chapter and Gamma Omicron - Wayne State.

What Have You Done To Earn A Place In My Inbox?

by Michelle Cubas, Gamma Omicron - Wayne State, www.positivepotentials.com

When was the last time you were excited to open your email? How many items were there to support you and serve you in some capacity? How many items were there to “sell” you something? Disproportionate, huh?

With Gen X and Y dominating the social media (not an indictment, simply an observation), something jumps out at me. Their sense of relationship is different than mine. Their social skills or lack of them are glaring. I see it with clients who want to know and understand how to “network.” They think it’s a surgical procedure we can implant in them.

News flash "ozone-0-sphere" — Relationships are cultivated, yes, like a garden. They require attention, resources like time and care. So, how does an ad in my inbox do that?

My point diverts from the opt-in issues. This is about why so many people think they know what I need—and they haven’t asked nor do I know them.

Quick tip—please use plentifully:
Each contact I have and make is accompanied with the promise that I will only offer relevant information relative to what we’ve shared or as I have learned a topic is of particular importance to them.
When I forward an article or make a call, it is with intention. I want to “show up” and serve my contact. It’s simple really.

Interestingly, it’s the authentic care and attention that is my best marketing tool. People like that they are being heard, served and supported. It can be as simple as pronouncing and spelling someone’s name right.

Often in our “humongous” spheres of contact, we make little of our spheres of influence. That is what I take seriously.

Want to make a difference? Make someone’s day by acknowledging, caring and supporting who they are.

Sororities aren't just for college students

By Mary Jekielek Insprucker, Special to the Tribune, The Chicago Tribune

When Sue Dunmead moved from Ohio to Schaumburg in 1976, she turned to a sorority to help her make new friends. Vicky Platt relied on one when her daughter was born with a rare neurological disorder. And Debbie Riplinger got help from her sorority sisters in fighting off foreclosure.

At the forefront of the local sorority movement are groups such as the Chicago Northwest Suburban Alumnae Panhellenic comprising sorority sisters who range in age from 23 to 89. The group represents 19 sororities, including Alpha Sigma Alpha, Alpha Phi, Kappa Delta and Chi Omega.

Dunmead, 59, recalled how Alpha Omicron Pi helped her make some crucial connections when she moved to the northwest suburbs.

"I was just going to work and coming home. I felt so isolated until I joined," said Dunmead, who participated in sorority dinners, book clubs, murder mysteries and other events. "I looked forward to them as a chance to catch up, vent and share."

Research has shown that friendships such as those found in sororities help participants improve self-esteem and coping skills, even kick the smoking habit, experts say.

For their part, sorority sisters say they have found their relationships to nourish spiritual, mental and physical growth. The dynamic diversity in ages, experience and interests help enrich their lives, they say. The organizations offer other outlets as well, including the chance for networking, career development and philanthropy.

"There is a body of research that shows social support to be a major factor in lessening the effects of stress, especially in the current economic situation," said Charles Johnston, co-chairman of Harper College's psychology department. "The support allows one to better meet the demands of the situation."

Several sorority umbrella organizations serve the Chicago area, including the Hinsdale Area Alumnae Panhellenic Association, which encompasses 22 sororities. Its 50 members are from Burr Ridge, Oak Brook, Clarendon Hills and other communities. Their focus is sorority recruitment.

"Sororities encourage scholarship, leadership and lifelong friendships," said Cyndi Myers, president of the group and a Chi Omega alumna. "I want to share that with potential recruits."

The Elmhurst Panhellenic is active in the Lombard and Wood Dale areas. It is represented by 21 sororities and 80 members. One of those members, Kathleen Sullivan of Theta Phi Alpha said she enjoys the diversity of the group, which includes stay-at-home moms and professionals.

"I actually hired one member for an accounting job," said Sullivan, 47. "It's a great way to network and find the right candidate."

Vicky Platt, of Mount Prospect, found more immediate help. When her daughter Emma was born with a medical condition, Alpha Omicron Pi rallied support through fundraisers and by providing baby-sitting, shopping and housekeeping help.

"I knew at a moment's notice, they would come to my aid," said Platt, 40. "At a time when I wasn't sure about my future, their encouragement assured me I was not alone."

That also was true for Debbie Riplinger, who joined Alpha Omicron Pi at age 47. The West Dundee resident faced foreclosure on her home until her sorority sisters stepped in with monetary support from their Hardship Fund.

"It was such a stressful time. I didn't want to say goodbye to my house," Riplinger said. "Even though they didn't know me that well, they kept me from the verge of foreclosure, pulling me up and saving me from drowning."

Barbara Bay, 57, of Alpha Delta Pi, appreciates the chance to give back. She considers her sorority members to be her sisters.

"Sisters are for being there," she said. "They make sure you come out the other end."

Kappa Delta Sorority Alumnae Today Directory

Kappa Delta Sorority is pleased to have teamed up with Harris Connect to produce another alumnae directory. Due to the overwhelming success of the recent past directories in 1995, 2000 and 2005, we knew our alumnae would be eager to remain connected to their beloved sisters and relive cherished memories.

By now, you should have received an e-mail and/or a postcard from Harris Connect, signed by National President Beth Langford, asking you to call and verify your information. Please take the time to do so as we want you to remain connected to Kappa Delta. Also, if you wish, please take a moment to review Harris Connect’s Privacy Policy at www.harrisconnect.com/privacy-policy so you can feel comfortable in giving them your information.

2010 RENEWAL CONTEST UPDATE - KD Magazine Agency

As of January 15, 2010, we are more than half way to our goal of 6,652 renewals! We currently have 3,710 renewals, and more are coming in each day. Read on to hear about the contest and what you can win by renewing your magazines.

Last year, the 2008-2009 magazine campaign resulted in 6,152 renewals. This is great, but we can do better. We have set a goal to increase that amount by 500. So, here is where the contest comes in...

If the Kappa Delta Magazine Agency hits the magic number of 6,652 renewals or above during this 2009-2010 campaign, each KD renewing subscriptions herself or selling a renewal will have her name entered into a drawing to win a $500 cash prize!!! The prize will be distributed as follows: $50 to the lucky KD and $450 to her KD group of choice—chapter, alumnae chapter, house corporation or the Kappa Delta Foundation. Each renewal will receive one entry, so multiple renewals increase your chances of winning.

The important part is that we must reach our goal of 500 additional renewals or more in order to trigger the contest and the $500 prize. So...renew, renew, renew...it is easy to do!

When you renew your existing subscription through the Kappa Delta Magazine Agency, nearly 50 percent of the proceeds of your subscription money goes to the chapter house fund. If you renew directly with the publisher, all of the money goes to the publisher, and Kappa Delta gets none of it. If you are paying the same amount of money either way, wouldn't you rather have your money go to help Kappa Delta?

Studies show that the average household spends $200 per year on magazine subscriptions. If every KD alumna renewed her subscriptions through the Kappa Delta Magazine Agency, it would help Kappa Delta immensely.

Important point: You did not have to purchase the initial subscription through the Kappa Delta Magazine Agency in order to renew through the Kappa Delta Magazine Agency.

QSP has a wide selection of magazines. They are more than 750 magazine, book and music titles to choose from and it accepts Master Card and VISA. Because QSP is the largest publisher clearinghouse in the United States, it can offer more choices and lower prices than any other vendor.

Follow the instructions below to take you to the QSP Web site dedicated to Kappa Delta Sorority so you can process your renewal.
Go to kd.efundraising.com 1. Type the name of your collegiate or alumnae chapter.
2. Click on the “Find” button.
3. When “Search Results” are displayed, click on the name of your collegiate or alumnae chapter.
4. This will take you to your collegiate or alumnae chapter’s personalized Web page.
5. Click on “Shop for Magazines” to access the online store.
6. Choose the magazines you want, (be sure to check renewal) and proceed to checkout. The renewal amount of issues will be automatically tacked on to the end of your current subscription.
If you have any questions, please contact Cindy Mize at 901-371-6357 or by e-mail at magazineagency@kappadelta.org.

Sales tip: Are you a doctor? Married to a doctor? Family member a doctor? Neighbor a doctor? Go to a doctor? Doctor’s offices (and other health professionals) are great sources of sales and renewals as we all peruse their magazines in the waiting room. What about hair/beauty salons? Same thing...they are great sources of sales/renewals.

Any professional who has a waiting room is a great person to approach about renewing subscriptions through the magazine agency. Then, once they see how easy it is to do, you can just give them a reminder each year to renew.

For most alumnae, magazine ordering has changed greatly from when they were in a collegiate chapter and has become easy and efficient and most of all, reliable. QSP has created a SHORT video that shows just how easy this is. To view click here.

Give it a try today—you will be pleasantly surprised!
