NATIONAL CHARITY LEAGUE, INC. RECEIVES $50,000 GRANT IN PARTNERSHIP WITH KAPPA DELTA SORORITY

National Charity League, Inc. is pleased to announce its new strategic partnership with Kappa Delta Sorority, which includes a grant of $50,000 to support leadership development programs for its members. This is the first strategic alliance of its kind for the 50+ year-old nonprofit mother-daughter membership organization that is based in southern California. “NCL is proud of its history of inspiring and empowering girls and women to succeed as confident, well-rounded and socially aware contributors in their communities,” said NCL executive director Hillary Niblo. “We are thrilled to have found a like-minded partner in Kappa Delta Sorority, which shares our values and is committed to investing in our long-term success.” “The women of Kappa Delta and NCL believe that communities benefit when girls have confidence and are inspired to do great things,” says Melanie Schild, KD executive director. “We are proud to align our efforts with NCL to maximize the impact both organizations can have on our world.” The two national women’s organizations, both of which are committed to shaping tomorrow’s leaders and supporting communities through volunteerism, plan to engage their members to make great things happen from coast to coast. Kappa Delta has a long history of partnering with innovative women’s organizations and companies that are addressing the issues that affect women and girls, including Girl Scouts of the USA, Association of Junior Leagues International, the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty and the Avon Foundation’s m.powerment Fund. Kappa Delta funding will assist NCL to further develop its leadership programs, and the sorority’s extensive alumnae network will aid in helping NCL to successfully reach its goals for expansion. NCL, which started as a small regional organization, has doubled in size in the last decade, and the demand for new chapters continues to grow nationwide.

“My resume is ready; now what?”

by Stacie Garlieb, Beta Psi - Arizona State, president of Successful Impressions, Inc.

Having a current resume that dynamically describes your skills and experience is the first step toward securing an internship, part-time job, or full-time position. The internet has made applying for positions easier in some ways and more complex in others. There are a lot of ways to contact potential employers, but knowing how and when separates the superior candidate from the one that never gets an interview.

First Step: Use job search engines to find employers that are in the ‘hiring phase’.
    - You may not find a position fitting your interest area, but you can find key information like a contact name, departments looking for candidates and a phone number.
    - Search engines with listings for companies of all sizes include: Career Builder, Yahoo Hot Jobs, Monster, and Indeed.

Second Step: Search on your college’s career services website for the NACE listings.
    - National Association of Collegiate Employers uses a database to post positions in various locations across the country. If you have never used your career services department, it is VERY important to post your resume on their website. Companies that recruit there will search on their own through the resume database with keywords to find potential candidates too! If you haven’t posted yours, you can’t be found.

Third Step: Create a “Top 20 List” for companies that you want to contact to potentially work for.
    - These may be some of the ones in the ‘hiring phase’ along with organizations you have heard about from peers, relatives, career services, professors, presentations in organizations and KD meetings or CAB members.

Fourth Step: Contact the companies on the list after getting information on the ‘best person’ to reach.
    - If you don’t have a personal contact, you can also do some private investigation work to get it.
Go to the company website and use their directory or department listing to help with direction on who would be in a managerial position to contact.
Call the company and ask for the department you are interested in. Ask who the manager of the department is and what email address they can be reached at to forward information.
    - If you get company information from a personal contact, ask if you can mention them when you email or call the person at the company. Having an ‘in’ and knowing someone is always a great advantage!
Be sure to ask if the contact is a KD! Sisters make great mentors and can help you reach people you may not otherwise be able to meet.

Fifth Step: Send a resume that is SPECIFIC to the company and when possible, the position you are applying for.
    - Companies get hundreds or more resumes for every posting, so your ‘Objective’ can either move you forward in the process or give someone a reason to delete the file. - Put the company name, job title (or general description like, ‘sales management’, ‘internship’), and what skills you have specific to that position and department in your ‘Objective’.

Sixth Step: Follow up with the department or person you sent the resume to – if you don’t, you risk never knowing where you stand and why your resume may not have moved you forward in the process.
    - The biggest mistake candidates make is NOT following up – don’t assume that the right person got your resume and read it.
    - Personal contact via phone is the best way to follow up. If a phone number is impossible to get, then sending a follow up email is next best.
    - Be persistent! Call every week until you have spoken with the person. They are busy with other responsibilities for their job. Making them know why you are a great candidate with strong skills will motivate them to take time and speak with you!

The process of sending resumes takes time and commitment. Keep notes on when you send them, to whom, and when and how you followed up. Staying organized and positive will increase your chances in being the candidate that makes it to the phone screen interview. Then you can share your skills and experience in school, work, and Kappa Delta to show you are qualified and enthusiastic!

    National Charity League
For more than 50 years, National Charity League, Inc. (NCL) has thrived as one of the nation’s most distinctive and well-respected mother-daughter membership organizations which gives mothers and daughters unique opportunities to strengthen their bond while growing together, sharing of themselves and improving their communities. It is the only national organization committed to fostering the mother-daughter relationship through philanthropic, leadership and cultural activities together as well as in peer groups. NCL members are mothers and daughters in grades 7-12 who are committed to the mission and vision of NCL and who believe in the organization’s core values. The NCL Experience inspires and empowers women to succeed as confident, well-rounded and socially aware contributors in their communities.

The mothers, called Patronesses, work closely with their daughters, hold a Chapter job each year and actively participate as leaders in the operational success of the Chapter. The daughters, called Ticktockers, follow a program with age appropriate, meaningful opportunities in the areas of personal development (life skills), leadership development (professional skills) and cultural competency (social skills). Chapters evaluate the needs of the community and partner with a variety of philanthropies to provide hands-on volunteer support of time and skill.

    Membership
The new Cherry Blossom Chapter is recruiting mothers and daughters in grades 7-12 who reside in or attend school in Fairfax County and the surrounding areas, including Arlington County, Loudoun County, the City of Alexandria and the District of Columbia. Pinwheels for Prevention - Kappa Delta Supports Prevent Child Abuse America

Provided below is information about an ongoing and exciting opportunity Kappa Delta has to support its national philanthropic partner – Prevent Child Abuse America – that can also supplement your Shamrock Events this school year. In 2008, Prevent Child Abuse America unveiled Pinwheels for Prevention, a new national signature campaign introducing the pinwheel as the symbol for child abuse and neglect prevention in the United States. The pinwheel represents PCA America’s efforts to change the way our nation thinks about prevention, focusing on community activities and public policies that prioritize prevention right from the start to make sure child abuse and neglect never occur.

pinwheel.jpgThe campaign is off to a very strong start as more than 900,000 pinwheels were displayed nationwide in April last year. It is providing people with the opportunity to make commitments big and small to preventing abuse and ensuring the healthy development of our nation’s children. To learn more about the campaign, we encourage you to see the attached one-page overview and visit the campaign web site at www.pinwheelsforprevention.org.

We would now like to invite Kappa Delta collegiate and alumnae chapters to lead the effort to bring this growing national movement to college campuses nationwide by integrating the sale of pinwheels into your Shamrock Events. Not only will doing so help you continue to raise awareness of child abuse prevention, but also provide yet one more way to raise funds for the charity Kappa Delta has supported for more than 25 years. The following guidelines provide direction and creative ideas on how you can implement this effort on your campus. As always, Prevent Child Abuse America offers its deepest appreciation for Kappa Delta’s unending and most generous support of preventing the abuse and neglect of our nation’s children.

    Implementation

To help achieve the successful implementation of Pinwheels for Prevention on your campus, we would like to provide the following suggestions.

    1. Shamrock Events
The obvious and perhaps easiest way to sell pinwheels on campus or in your community would be to integrate them into the activities you already have planned for this year’s Shamrock Events. If you decide to go this route, some ideas for making the most of this effort would include:

  • Incorporate the pinwheels in any event promotion you conduct, highlighting the fact that this is part of a highly successful and growing national campaign where nearly 750,000 pinwheels will be displayed since last April.
  • Sell pinwheels to attendees at your event(s), separate from any admission you may charge. You are welcome to sell the pinwheels for $1.00 each or for any greater amount you see fit.
  • Plant the pinwheels in a “pinwheel garden” in conjunction with your event and/or in a public place on your campus, such as outside your student union or in front of your sorority’s house.
  • Encourage fellow students, friends, co-workers and neighbors to take a stand against child abuse and for the healthy development of our nation’s children by purchasing a pinwheel to display on their own or plant as part of your pinwheel garden.
  • Set-up your pinwheels sales as a “challenge” among members for who sells the most pinwheels, or among other student organizations who buys and displays the most. Award a prize to the winner, such as a gift certificate to a local restaurant.

    2. Additional Ideas
In addition to selling pinwheels as part of your Shamrock Events, you may consider additional ways to promote and sell pinwheels on campus. Some ideas would include:

  • Participate in, and selling pinwheels at, other campus or community events
  • Set-up tables in your student union, dorms or other popular campus/community areas
  • Approach local businesses to sell pinwheels and/or sponsor your pinwheels garden
  • Ask your local and/or student newspapers to promote the pinwheels
  • Invite faculty or university departments and local officials to support this campaign
  • Approach your school’s athletic department to ask if you can sell pinwheels at sporting or other campus events

    Placing Your Orders

To order pinwheels for your chapter, simply visit the web site below. Your chapter will not be charged for the order or for shipping and handling. You will simply be asked to submit the funds raised from your pinwheels sales (separate from your other fundraising activities, see accounting instructions below), and any unsold pinwheels, to Prevent Child Abuse America after your events have been completed. For example, if you order 384 pinwheels (the pinwheels come 192 per case), you’ll be expected to send in $384, or if you don’t sell all pinwheels, the total of your pinwheel sales plus any remaining unsold pinwheels. As supplies are limited, we ask that you order the amount you think you can reasonably sell.

    Instructions:
    1. To place your pinwheels order, visit member.preventchildabuse.org/kdpinwheels
    2. Order the amount you believe you can reasonably sell. Better to run out than have too many.
    3. You’ll order in increments of 192 as that’s how they are packaged by the manufacturer.
    4. Your order will come with a sheet noting the quantity ordered and instructions for sending in the funds raised through pinwheels sales, and unsold pinwheels, to Prevent Child Abuse America. Again, you will not be asked to pay for the pinwheels upfront nor the shipping and handling to send them to you.
    5. When placing your order, be sure to provide a name, number, complete mailing address (no P.O. boxes please) and e-mail address for your chapter’s primary contact.

When sending in the funds raised from your pinwheels sales and/or unsold pinwheels, make the check out to Prevent Child Abuse America, indicate your chapter and school, and send to:

    Prevent Child Abuse America
    Attn: Matt Feldman
    500 N. Michigan Avenue
    Suite 200
    Chicago, IL 60611

    Accounting

It is very important to follow these instructions carefully.

Unlike the funds from your Shamrock Event, which are still submitted to Kappa Delta National Headquarters along with your Shamrock Event final report, all funds raised from the sale of pinwheels must be accounted for separately and sent to Prevent Child Abuse America directly, following the instructions provided above. It is important to keep the revenue from pinwheel sales separate in order to accurately track all funds raised through your Shamrock Events as part of our national philanthropic effort, versus dollars raised specifically for Prevent Child Abuse America’s Pinwheels for Prevention campaign. This will also be integral in helping Prevent Child Abuse America manage its inventory of pinwheels.

For example, if your chapter raises $1,000 at your Shamrock Event, as usual, 20% of that money raised (less expenses) needs to be sent to Kappa Delta Headquarters and 80% is sent to the local philanthropic site designated to receive your proceeds. In addition, if your chapter sells 384 pinwheels – in conjunction with your Shamrock Event or separately – you need to account for that cost and income in your Final Report Form and then send the $384 check to Prevent Child Abuse America.

Nashville Alumnae Chapter hosts Anti-Bullying Workshop for local Girl Scouts

On August 1st, 2009 the Nashville Kappa Delta Alumnae Chapter hosted its first Anti-Bullying Workshop in conjunction with Kappa Delta’s new partnership with American Girl!

Six troops from Middle Tennessee joined us for our first anti-bully workshop. Girl Scout Chair, Kathleen Goodman, opened the workshop by talking about different kinds of bullying. Many girls shared experiences they are faced with at school. To help the girls think of ways to stop bullying, Kathleen showed a short clip from Chrissa Stands Strong, the new DVD from American Girl featuring the 2009 Girl of the Year, Chrissa Maxwell. After watching Chrissa battle the bullies in her class, the girls participated in various skits that provided different techniques used to stop bullying. One troop leader said, “I think role plays are a great way for the girls to practice being strong and standing up for themselves.”

To help raise awareness about bullying, each troop created No-Bully Posters to have throughout the school year and remind them to stand up for themselves and their friends. All the girls created posters which said “Stop the Bullying,” “Make friends,” “Be kind to others,” etc. as a way to reinforce what they learned today and also to help remind them as they are faced with bullying issues at school. Each girl got to decorate a friendship bracelet that spelled out “S-H-I-N-E” and included other fun decorative beads. Nashville alumnae and collegiate chapter members from Sewanee were available to help the girls. S-H-I-N-E- means: Stand up to put-downs; Help those who are being bullied; Inform adults when necessary; Never use technology to hurt others' and Encourage others to stand up too. In addition to the friendship bracelets, all Girl Scout participants signed a “No-bully” pledge which summarized the meaning of S-H-I-N-E while emphasizing the importance of standing strong, speaking out, and being a good friend.

The workshop concluded with all participants posing for a picture while proudly showing their No-Bully Pledges. Our first workshop was a huge success and all fourteen participants mentioned how the techniques learned will help them feel more confident in school. This particularly applied to those who were moving on to middle school this year. We were pleased to have six alumnae chapter members and four collegiate members from Sewanee participate.

    Helping while Searching

Do you spend a lot of time on Google or Yahoo searching for information on the Internet? Now there is a place you can go to search the Internet while helping the Kappa Delta Foundation. www.GoodSearch.com is a new search engine, which donates 50 percent of its revenue to charitable organizations and schools that its users designate (the other 50 percent is what it uses to run the company day to day). You use GoodSearch.com like any other search engine - the site is powered by Yahoo! - but each time you do, money is generated for philanthropic causes, such as the Kappa Delta Foundation.

    Here's how it works:

    1. Go to www.goodsearch.com (which is powered by Yahoo!)
    2. Type Kappa Delta Foundation into the "I support" box and click on "verify"
    3. Since GoodSearch shares its advertising revenue with charities and schools, every time you search the Web at GoodSearch, you'll be earning money for the Kappa Delta Foundation.

Organizations earn an estimated penny per search. Hence, if 500 people searched four times a day on behalf of one organization, it would earn $7300 in a year. Think how much we could raise if we all used it!

The company launched in November 2005 and has been covered by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Variety and other publications: www.goodsearch.com/Press.aspx. GoodSearch does not require that users sign up and does not collect any user information. They only ask that organizations and supporters help spread the word.

GoodSearch was founded by a brother/sister team, both of whom have extensive and successful Internet company experience, in memory of their mother who passed away from cancer. They wanted to create an organization which gave back to the community in her honor. Their dream is to write millions of dollars worth of checks every year to good causes.

Take advantage of this very simple way to give back to the Kappa Delta Foundation. Every search will help to continue to provide leadership opportunities for collegians and alumnae and help children across the country. Every penny counts!

RENEW, RENEW, RENEW--Wouldn't you rather have your money go to Kappa Delta?

    magazine-prog.jpg

This year the focus in the magazine agency is going to be renewals. When you renew your existing subscription through the Kappa Delta Magazine Agency, nearly 50 percent of the proceeds of your subscription money goes to the chapter house fund. If you renew directly with the publisher, all of the money goes to the publisher, and Kappa Delta gets none of it. If you are paying the same amount of money, either way, wouldn't you rather have your money go to help Kappa Delta?

Studies show that the average household spends $200 per year on magazine subscriptions. If every KD alumna renewed her subscriptions through the Kappa Delta Magazine Agency, it would help Kappa Delta immensely.

Important point: You did not have to purchase the initial subscription through the Kappa Delta Magazine Agency in order to renew through the Kappa Delta Magazine Agency.

QSP has a wide selection of magazines. They have over 750 magazine, book and music titles to choose from and it accepts Master Card and VISA. Because QSP is the largest publisher clearinghouse in the United States, it can offer more choices and lower prices than any other vendor.

Follow the instructions below to take you to the QSP Web site dedicated to Kappa Delta Sorority so you can process your renewal.

Ready to start shopping? 1. Go to kd.efundraising.com
    2. Type the name of your collegiate or alumnae chapter.
    3. Click on the “Find” button.
    4. When "Search Results" are displayed, click on the name of your chapter.
    5. This will take you to your chapter’s or alumnae chapter’s personalized Web page.
    6. Click on “Shop for Magazines” to access the online store.
    7. Choose the magazines you want (be sure to check renewal) and proceed to checkout.

Visit kd.efundraising.com and have a fantastic time choosing your favorite magazines while helping Kappa Delta.
