Shamrock Success: Alumnae Chapters Raise Funds to Help Prevent Child Abuse

From festive meals to 5K runs to congenial scrapbooking events, Kappa Delta alumnae are creating ways to get together for a good cause – to raise funds to help prevent child abuse. Since forming an alliance in 1981 with Prevent Child Abuse America, Kappa Delta has raised nearly $10 million through Shamrock Events on campuses and in our communities. Twenty percent of the proceeds is donated to PCAA, and 80 percent goes toward local child-abuse prevention efforts. Here’s a sampling of how KD alumnae chapters are supporting this worthwhile cause:

KDs from Atlanta Night and Greater Atlanta Day alumnae chapters join forces to support a Shamrock Run hosted by Epsilon Gamma-North Georgia.

Atlanta Night alumnae chapter members traded in their running shoes for high heels to attend their own Shamrock Event at a local restaurant. The eatery donated 10 percent of the evening’s sales to the AC for child-abuse prevention.
From left, Amanda Marshall, granddaughter of alumna Mary Asher Usher; Sarah Palmer Wiszkon; and Carolyn Boewer Cotta are among the St. Louis alumnae chapter members who manned booths at local groceries. The donations they collected were given locally to South Side Day Nursery in St. Louis.
Marcia Moore Booher and Donna McLendon Boensch participate in “Crop 4 Care,” a Shamrock Event hosted by the Dayton, Ohio, alumnae chapter. Area alumnae were joined by collegians from Alpha Nu-Wittenberg and other guests for a day of scrapbooking and card-making. Breakfast and lunch were provided by Kappa Delta sisters, and everyone enjoyed a day of fellowship while making progress on their scrapbook and card projects. Locally, the event benefited Care House, a child advocacy center affiliated with Dayton Children's Hospital.
Presenting a check to Lori Howard, center, of The Lovelady Center are Mountain Brook, Ala., alumnae chapter members, from left, Julianne Partridge Buckley, AC President Romona Hall Shannon, Sally Stevenson Yeilding and Rebecca Hiller. More than 90 guests attended a Shamrock party, which was planned by Ashley Randolph McMahon and Adelaide Kendrick Vandevelde and held at the home of Lisa Caldwell Flake and her husband, Jared. Julianne, Sally and Rebecca, who served as philanthropy co-chairmen, organized a successful raffle for the dinner event. The proceeds that were given to The Lovelady Center will help provide services to women who are homeless as a result of substance abuse or domestic violence or those transitioning from prison to society.
Nation's Capital alumnae chapter members, including Katie Lee and Elizabeth Lauten at center, join Alpha Rho-Maryland collegians for the chapter’s annual Shamrock event – a flag football tournament followed by a pasta dinner held at the house.
Newport Harbor, Calif., alumnae chapter members Pam Slaby Selawski, left, and Marilyn MaGee Stalnecker peruse the silent auction baskets at the 27th annual Shamrock Luncheon and Silent Auction hosted jointly by Newport Harbor, Long Beach and Orange County ACs. This year’s event raised nearly $14,000 for the prevention of child abuse.
